Microneedling is a therapeutic procedure that requires the use of a device covered with little needles which are basically designed to pierce holes and create ‘micro injuries’ on the surface of the skin. Actually, these holes are therapeutic; they contribute to a younger look by
– stimulating the production of collagen in the skin
– plumping the skin
– filling in fine lines on the skin
For decades, microneedling has been employed by dermatologists to treat facial scars. But recently, the availability of microneedling devices or at-home microneedling has caused an upsurge in collagen induction therapy which has got a lot of people talking.
But the real question everyone is asking is how effective is this therapy for treating scars and wrinkles? And can it be safely performed at home?
This treatment may not be recommended for you if you are afraid of needles. In order to help combat stretch marks, wrinkles or acne scars, this procedure might be good for you especially if you care less about a little bit of prickly therapy.
This procedure works great for general skin rejuvenation, discoloration, fine lines, and sunken areas on the skin caused by chickenpox or acne. Apart from the face, this safe procedure can also be used on several body areas, including the hands, back, abdomen, legs, neck and arms. Microneedling can be generally customized to meet the needs of any patient.
Microneedling at Home
Today, there has been an increase in the availability of home devices of microneedling. If you are considering the at-home option, you need to think twice. In fact, it is best to do it in the clinic at the hands of a professional aesthetician, nurse or physician. The risk of scarring and infection is ever-present at home.
The potential for scarring is not far-fetched in the wounds created in the skin. Although this procedure is generally known to be effective and valuable, however, it is best performed by a dermatologist. It is an uncommon procedure that requires plenty of courage. In fact, you need to be pretty brave to get over one millimeter.
There is always a real risk of harm. Apart from the hurting aspect, the risk of scarring and infection is more evident with longer needles.
How Microneedling is Performed
In a bid to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure, the dermatologist will apply an anesthetic cream to the patient’s skin. Water may also be applied to ensure skin lubrication and smooth dermaroller glide on skin. Then the dermatologist creates tiny holes in the surface by rolling the microneedling device over the patient’s skin.
This process which renders the skin somewhat red like sunburn usually lasts for 30 minutes. This is not an instant fix, it takes weeks and sometimes months for natural collagen growth to occur. However, you are sure to have a much-improved skin over time.
